Language Walk
Walk with friends, immerse yourself in nature or cityscapes, and practice languages together!
What is a Language Walk
We love learning and practicing languages and we love walking, exploring and hiking. So why not combining those two activities? Language Walk is a 2-4 hour walk or hike combined with language exchange and an opportunity to learn more about local culture, architecture, and observe nature.
The walks we organise are typically relatively easy walks of 2-3 hours and accessible for most people. Sometimes, we mix in 4-5 hour hikes that are a bit more challenging and we communicate this beforehand.
Languages: You can practice many languages depending on the location. We encourage everybody to contribute speaking their mother tongue and thus helping others to practice that language and we invite participants to also practice some target languages. Some participants choose to speak their own language or mostly one target language while others might join a Spanish speaking group for 20 minutes, then switch to join an English speaking group, learn some words in a local dialect and finally converse in Mandarin - all are welcome and there is no minimum requirement other than being able to speak at least one language.
Currently, most Language Walks take place in the Greater Taipei Area and Mandarin, English, Spanish, German, and French are mostly spoken during the walks.

Our Previous Walks
February 23, 2025: we finally made it to Taichung. 23 participants met at the glasshouse at the botanical garden. This time, there were a lot of German speakers as well as Spanish speakers. As usual, Mandarin and English served as our main languages, but we also practiced a lot of Spanish and German. On the way, we explored a temple that was also new for many residents of that very area. The temple was dedicated to medicinal herbs and the God/Emperor of Agriculture. We finished our walk at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and had lunch there together. Hope we can come back to Taichung someday or you all join us sometimes in Taipei!
February 16, 2025: we met at Nanshijiao MRT Station and in total we were 42 participants! Wonderful. We were lucky again as it was not warm nor cold and slightly cloudy allowing us to tackle the many stairs. We visited different temples at Hongludi and learned a lot about the God of Earth and other Gods. Besides French, German, English, Spanish and Mandarin, we had again a good group speaking Taiwanese together and for the first time ever, we sticked to our schedule!
January 12, 2025: we met at CKS MRT Station and visited Nanmen Market before then heading towards Wanhua. On the way, we visited the Craft Museum and learnt about calligraphy and pottery and visited the botanical garden. In total, we were 20 people and focussed mostly on German, Mandarin, Spanish, but also English and Taiwanese! In the Wanhua District, we practiced more Taiwanese, visited LongShan temple and witnessed local gatherings at small street temples and we spoke in several languages about social issues like homeless people.
December 15, 2024: we met at Taipei Zoo and took the Gondola up to Maokong where we experienced local tea culture. This time, we were only 17 people and focussed mostly on Spanish, English and Mandarin with a bit of Bahasa and German in the mix. It was very cold up in the mountains and surprisingly there are some banana and papaya trees up there. Thanks all for joining and please have a look on our reddit group to review many new words that we learnt.
November 17, 2024: against the backdrop of a rainy day, we were still more than 20 people. This time, we focussed a lot on local culture. We visited the Ketagalan museum and the Hot Spring Museum and visited the local hot spring area. While the walk was short, we engaged in language sessions in English, Mandarin, German, Italian, Spanish and we had a special session of Vietnamese! Besides, we played some Polyglot games - more to come!
November 03, 2024: a small group of 10 language enthusiasts met at Hamasen MRT in Kaohsiung. We went over to Qijin Island to explore the island, the historic lighthouse and historic fort. Speaking Mandarin, English, German and Spanish and a bit of French and with a lot of Polyglot games.
October 13, 2024: 42 language walkers met in DaHu Park and walked along the little creek while speaking English, French, Spanish and Mandarin. This time, we also included Polish and German and hiked up to waterfalls and a monastery with a fantastic view.
September 15, 2024: 30 language walkers met at Wulai to explore local culture and nature. We spoke English, Mandarin, German, French and Spanish.
